Lintwood Farm Chapter 5

Here is Chapter Five

Chapter 5

An ambulance pulled up into the drive and a paramedic helped Ellie out and handed her some crutches,
"Ellie, Ellie" Chrissie ran out of the house and gave her sister a hug "Ellie you're back"
"Of course I am" she replied. Martin came out to greet her and gave her a massive hug and kissed her forehead,
"I'm glad you're ok" he said looking at her, she smiled,
"Me too, though me knee really hurts"
"Let's get you inside and sat down". The paramedic handed Martin some pain relief medication for Ellie to take every four hours.
Back in the house everyone was sat in the living room talking and laughing. They told Ellie about the dinner they were going to have that evening,
"We've got carrots and cabbage and potatoes, even and whole chicken" Chrissie and Louis said,
"How did you manage a whole chicken"
"I managed to pull a few strings with Mr Brook at the butches" Martin said. Nicky entered the room and everyone looked at her. Ellie held out her hand to invite her mother over and smiled at her. She walked and took Ellie's hand. She sat down with everyone else and joined in the conversation.

Later that evening after dinner Martin, Jennifer, Lindsey, Louis and Chrissie cleaned the kitchen and dining room whilst Nicky and Ellie talked in the living room,
"Sweetheart, I am so, so sorry, I didn't mean to push you" Nicky hugged her daughter,
"Mum it's ok, you were upset and angry and I'm pretty sure I would have done the same if I had held it all in for a week" Ellie hugged her mother back,
"I know but I really am sorry"
"Mum, it's ok, I hope you are feeling better"
"How can I feel better" Nicky began to cry "I've lost the love of my life and it's not fair, I can't live without him, I can't"
"I know you can't, but listen, you have three beautiful children and a farm to keep you busy, you don't have to think about it all the time, I know it hurt,we're are all hurting too. You didn't just lose a husband, we all lost a father and it is so hard but it's even harder when you aren't around. We need you mum" Ellie took her mother's hands "Mum please we need you"
"I know, Ellie I know, I think I will just concentrate on the vegetable garden, after all your father was very, very proud of it"
"That sounds great, at least it will get you outside" Ellie smiled at her mother as she wiped her eyes, Nicky smiled back.

"Louis stop it" Jennifer said giving Louis a little push as he tried to throw water at her whilst washing up,
"Haha, come on Jenny, it's not my fault you...wet yourself" Louis through a hand full of water at Jennifer's skirt,
"Louis" Jennifer shouted
"What's going on" Martin asked as he entered the kitchen,
"Martin, Louis throw water at me and soaked my skirt"
"Did not"
"Did too"
"Did not"
"Did too"
"Oi, you two stop shouting at each other ok, and Louis stop throwing water around and behave yourself, ok"
"Yes Martin" Louis and Jennifer replied at the same time,
"Can't believe you got us into trouble" Louis said to Jennifer as Martin walked away,
"Me, that was you" Jennifer replied with a tone in her voice,
"I'm watching you two very closely" Martin shouted from the dining room. Lindsay and Chrissie giggled as they had been watching from the table. The dining room was all clean and tidy and Martin, Chrissie and Lindsey were getting a board game out to play. Nicky and Ellie came back into the dining room,
"Hey, is everything ok" Martin asked as they approached the table,
"Everything's fine Mums apologised" Ellie replied. Nicky went to give Chrissie  hug,
"Mummy" Chrissie though her arms around her mother as she knelt down to give her a hug,
"Mum, Mum" Louis ran in from the kitchen and also gave Nicky a hug. Martin approached Ellie and put his arm round her,
"You ok Ellie"
"Yes I'm fine, I just hope Mum will be ok" Ellie looked on as her mother and siblings as they continued hugging.

Later that night after Martin had tucked Lindsey and Chrissie in to bed and said goodnight to the other two, he went to see Ellie,
"Hi, Martin" Ellie smiled as Martin entered the room,
"How's your knee" Martin sat on her bed next to her,
"It's a little sore, I've taken my medication I'm just waiting for the pain to go down"
Martin put his arm round her and took her hand,
"I was really worried about you Ellie"
"I know"
"I don't know what I would have done if you had been in a more serious condition" Ellie smiled at him,
"I don't know what I would have done either, I don't know what would have happened to Chrissie or Louis"
"I would have looked after them no matter what happened"
"Thank you Martin" Ellie rested her head against Martin's shoulder and sighed "I wish none of this had happened, the war, Dad being killed, Mum breaking down"
"I know, I wish it hadn't happened either, but I'm not going anywhere, I'm going to stay here and look after you"
"I don't need looking after"
"I know, but at the moment you do"
"Ok, maybe I do right now but when my knees better I won't need looking after"
"Well, whether you need looking after or not, I'm always going to look after you" they both looked at each other, Martin kissed Ellie on the cheek and smiled. They both leaned in and gave each other a slow passionate kiss.

The wind blew strong the next morning and whistled as it blew round the house. Chrissie was the first out of bed and dressed. She went into everyone else's rooms to see who else was awake, but they were all still asleep. She went downstairs and set the table for breakfast. She put a bowl and side plate with a spoon and knife in each place at the table. In the middle she put the cereal boxes, butter and toast rack. She slipped her coat on and ran out in to the wind towards barn,
"Good morning Dee Dee, good morning, Lisa, good morning Missy, good morning Bernadette, time for breakfast" Chrissie poured bird food into the chicken feed. After she went back to the house to find the milkman had arrived,
"Hello Mr. Milkman, thank you for the milk" Chrissie said as she took the milk from his hands.
"You're welcome Miss Pickard"
Chrissie went back into the house and put the milk in the fridge. She filled the kettle and put it on the stove to boil. She got three tea cups out of the cupboard and put tea bags in them.
"Good morning Chrissie" Martin stood in the doorway to the kitchen,
"Good morning Martin, cup of tea" Chrissie replied
"Yes please Chrissie" Chrissie took the kettle and poured hot water into one of the cup on the kitchen side and made Martin a cup of tea,
"Thank you Chrissie" Martin said taking the cup from Chrissie "did you sleep well" he asked sipping his tea,
"Yes I did, though the wind did wake me up this morning" Chrissie replied as she made two more cups of tea,
"Yeah it woke me up too, are they for Ellie and Nicky"
"Yes this one's Ellie's, I'll take Mummies" Chrissie picked up her mother's cup of tea and left the room, Martin looked on as he thought about what happened between Ellie and him the night before.

"Morning Mummy" Chrissie said as she walked into her mother's room. Nicky was awake and standing at the window looking down onto the vegetable garden,
"Morning sweetheart" Nicky turned around to see her youngest child bring her a cup of tea "is that for me"
"Yes, are you feeling better now" Chrissie replied as she handed her mother her cup of tea,
"A little but I'm still hurting" she gave her daughter a big hug.

In Ellie's room, Ellie was lying awake in bed thinking back to the night before, she heard a knock at the door,
"Come in" she shouted from her bed,
"Morning Ellie, mind if I..."Martin poked his head round the door,
"No not at all" Ellie cut him off, Martin approached the bed and handed Ellie her cup of tea,
"Chrissie made you a cup of tea"
"Aww how kind of her" Ellie sipped her tea,
"Yeah she is quite kind" Martin smiled
"Yes she is, she's always been this kind and bubbly, It's who she is" They both sat in silence for a few minutes,
"Look Ellie" Martin began "about last night, I...I" he sighed "The truth is I really, really like you and I think we could really have something" Ellie looked at him "I know there's a spark between us" they both looked at each other,
"Martin, I really like you too" she smiled and blushed,
"You're blushing"
"I know" Martin leaned in and kissed her again,
"Ellie do you want to, maybe go out with me"
"Yes, I thought you'd never ask" they smiled at each other then gave each other a long sultry kiss.

"Good Morning" Ellie and Martin entered the dining room together,
"About time you two got together" Jennifer said smiling at them,
"What, you two are together" Nicky stared at them,
"Well Martin and me have romantic feelings for each other" Ellie replied,
"Oh...that's great" Nicky stood up and gave them a hug "we were hoping this would happen one day"
"We?" Ellie and Martin said together,
"Ian, Patrick, Lucy and me, who else" Nicky smiled and sat back down, Martin pulled out a chair for Ellie and helped her sit down,
"Thank you Martin"
"You're welcome" Martin kissed her.

Mrs. Latham returned to teach that morning and Louis wasn't happy,
"But she's really mean" he fussed as Martin insisted he get into his school uniform,
"Louis uniform now"
"But I don't want to" Louis through his uniform on the bed,
"Louis you have to go to school now, put your uniform on"
"No"
"Louis Alfred Pickard" Ellie stood at the door "What did you promise Dad before he left"
"To take care of the farm"
"And"
"To take care of his favourite girls"
"And" Ellie stared him down,
"And to attend school"
"Right so uniform on now" Louis started to put on his uniform "just because Dads not coming back doesn't mean you can break your promises to him"
"Yes Ellie"
"Now downstairs, Mrs Latham is waiting for you" Louis ran downstairs and into the classroom,
"Good morning Louis, I trust we are ready to begin" Mrs Latham said as Louis came in,
"Yes Mrs Latham" he replied
"Please be seated" they all sat down ready to begin, "now today, British History starting with Henry VIII. Now please read the handout I have given you then we will discuss it." Everyone started reading as Mrs Latham poured herself a cup of tea.

Nicky was rummaging through the cupboard in the greenhouse looking for Asparagus to plant,
"Mum are you Ok" Ellie hobbled into the greenhouse,
"I'm fine just looking for the Asparagus,
"It's on top of the cupboard"
"Oh thank you" Nicky smiled at her daughter then got back to work. Ellie made her way back to the house though the strong wind. Martin came walking up from the barn as he been feeding the cows and put his arms round her to keep her steady,
"Oh thank you Martin"
"Don't want you falling over do we"
"No we don't" they smiled at each other then kissed. They made their way back into the house and sat down at the table for a cup of tea,
"How's your mum" Martin asked as he took Ellie's hand,
"Planting Asparagus" she laughed
"At least she's not in her room",
"Yes that's good but she's still grieving, we all are, I mean Louis this morning, he's never been like that before, I know Mrs. Latham is strict but he has never done that before"
"Ellie" Martin put his other arm round her "things will get better , it will just take time, Jennifer was exactly the same when my Mother died, but they will recover. Time is the only healer"
"I know, but it's just so hard, I'm trying to be strong for everyone, for Louis and Chrissie and Mum and all I want to do is sit around and cry" Ellie began to cry, Martin pulled her close and wrapped his arms around her,
"Ellie, Ellie come on, it's going to be alright, it will, I promise"
"I know" she tried to stop herself crying "you must think I'm pathetic"
"No, I don't, I was exactly the same last year and it's ok to cry" he held her close and softly caressed her hand,
"Martin"
"Yes"
"Does it ever stop hurting"
"No" More tears streamed down Ellie's face, "but you learn to live with it and move on, you find something else to make you happy and keep your mind off things" Martin kissed Ellie on the head,
"What did you do"
"I focused on helping my dad out with my sisters and making up stories for them. It actually really helped them"
"Any chance they will help Louis" they both gave a little laugh,
"You really are a great man Martin, I feel like the luckiest girl in the world"
"And I'm the luckiest man in the world" They both kissed.

"Right so Jennifer, what did the hand out say about Henry VIII" Mrs. Latham asked
"He became king in 1509" Jennifer replied
"Yes, Lindsey what did you learn"
"He separated the Church of England from the Catholic Church"
"Very good Lindsey, Louis"
"He had six wives" Louis said
"And Chrissie"
"Two wives were called Anne, three Catharine's and one Jane"
"Well done Chrissie, gold star" Mrs. Latham put a gold cut out star on  chart that hung on the wall,
"Now who can tell me what year Henry VIII was born in" they all raised their hands.

"Ellie you have a letter" Nicky handed Ellie a letter,
"Oh my god, it's from Brenda" Ellie said as she read who the letter was from,
"Who's Brenda" Martin asked
"My friend from school, she's in London training to be a nurse, she left in September"
"How is she" Nicky asked
"She's fine, she's been dating a soldier from Cornwall and is really enjoying her training"
"That's good"
"Aw, she won't be home for Christmas" Ellie looked sad again,
"Are you ok beautiful" Martin asked,
"Yes, I'm fine, I just could do with a nice girly chat after everything that's happened"
"Come here you" Martin hugged Ellie and made her smile,
"Are you making lunch darling" Nicky asked
"Yes, that's why all the lunch stuff is on the table" Ellie replied sarcastically with a smile
"Oh alright" Nicky replied softly
"Mummy" Chrissie shouted as she walked into the room, she ran and gave her mother a hug,
"Is lunch ready" Louis asked
"Yes but you need to tell me what you would like in your sandwich first" Ellie told him,
"Tuna" Lindsey shouted
"Me too please" Louis replied
"Jam for me please" Chrissie said still with her arms wrapped around her mother
"Ok and Jenny what would you like"
"Um can I have ham please"
"Of course you can" Ellie made Martin and her siblings their lunch and handed it to them
"Thank you Ellie" they all said,
"Martin what would you like"
"It's ok sweetie, you make yours, I'll make my own" Martin said, everyone looked at them,
"I'll take it" Lindsey said " 'Sweetie' "
"Yes Lindsey, we are together, you know that from this morning"
"Yes but the pet name" Jennifer put in,
"All couples have pet names Jenny" Nicky weighed in "Me and Patrick did anyway"
"What pet names did you and dad have" Ellie asked
"I called him my farming hero and he called be Bluebell due to the obsession I use to have with them, ooh maybe I should plant some in the garden"
"Yeah you could go down to Mrs. Browns shop and see when she is going to get some in to plant" Ellie replied with a smile, Nicky smiled back.
"Guess what we were learning about today" Chrissie said to her mum,
"What did you learn about today"
"Henry VIII"
"Really and what did you learn"
"He had six wives and was really over weight"
"Really"
"Yes, he loved his food" Chrissie laughed
Everyone sat down and ate lunch chatting away about what to do at Christmas,
"We should do something nice for dad maybe make a little memorial or something" Louis said as he chewed away at his sandwich,
"Louis don't speak with your mouth full, it's rude but yes that sounds like a lovely idea" Nicky replied
"I like it" Ellie said "It would be nice to have a place to lie down flowers for dad every Christmas, birthday, anniversary and father's day"
"Yes it would" Nicky said looking on

Lintwood Farm Chapter 4

Here is Chapter Four

Chapter 4

"Achoo" Ellie sneezed as she came down the stairs,
"Bless you" Martin called from the dining room,
"Thank you" Ellie had been ill all week, she had had to let Martin take over planning the memorial service and running the farm as she rested and recovered. She was feeling better but still had a cold. She made her way into the kitchen to put breakfast together for her mother,
"Ellie let me do that, you're still not well" Martin put his arm round her and his hand softly on hers,
"Martin, I'm fine, I feel a lot better today, anyway I can't rest today, It's the memorial service" she carried on making breakfast for her mum,
"Ok Ellie,  but leave everything else to me, you need to recover"
"Martin please, I know but my mum needs me, she won't listen to anyone else but me" Ellie raised her voice, something she had never done before in this situation, she stopped as everyone looked up from the table,
"Martin, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to raise my voice like that, Achoo"
"Ellie, It's ok, I know how you feel. You concentrate on your mother, I'll take care of everything else" Martin hugged Ellie, she sighed, picked up the tray and left the kitchen.
"Is Ellie going to be ok" A little voice said, Martin looked up to see Chrissie stood in the doorway to the kitchen,
"She will be fine Chrissie, It's just a hard time at the moment" he reached his arm out and gave Chrissie a hug "It will get better, I promise"

Ellie entered her mother's room, Nicky was still sat in the same place she had been sitting all week,
"Here we are mum" she placed the tray on the table in front of her mother "eat up, we have a long day ahead of us" Ellie walked over to the wardrobe and pulled out a black dress and shoes for her mother and laid them on the bed,
"would you like me to do your hair or do you want to do it yourself " Nicky was silent, she ate her breakfast with no sign of saying anything. Ellie did her mother's hair and helped her get dressed and put her shoes on, Nicky sat back down in her chair afterwards still not shading one tear. Ellie knew the feeling, she knew her mother's pain and how hard it was to spend the rest of their lives without a wonderful caring heartfelt man, but at the same time Ellie's pain was greater as it saddened her to see her mother like this,
"Post" Louis shouted from the hallway. The postman knocked on the door, Louis opened it with a big smile,
"Good morning Mr Postman" Louis stood in the doorway,
"Good morning Master Pickard, how's the family" the postman smiled,
"we're ok, getting there slowly"
"That's good, well here you are, I will see you again at 12, until then Master Pickard" the postman handed Louis a letter, then walked back up the driveway. Louis shut the door and looked at who the letter was addressed to,
"Martin, Martin" Louis ran into the dining room "the letter is addressed to you" Martin took the letter and opened it.
"It's from dad" he said to his younger sisters,
"What has he written" Jennifer asked as Lindsey and she gathered round Martin,
"He hopes we all well and coping and hopes we are all making an effort to help out more during this hard time for Nicky and the kid's"
"That's so kind of him to be thinking about us, considering where he is" Ellie appeared in the doorway "is he doing well" she asked,
"He said he's doing fine, nothing to report" Martin replied, he then looked down at the letter to a find a speech dedicated to Ellie's father "Ellie, my dad has sent something to be read out at the memorial service is that ok"
"Yes it is" Ellie replied " I will find somewhere to fit it in" she smiled and gave Martin a hug.

The church was full by the time everyone had arrived and taken their seats. As Ellie stood in front of everyone halfway through the service all she could see was a sea of black. Her mother sat at the front still spaced out, Ellie could tell she hadn't slept for a while. Tears started to roll down Ellie's face as she read out her father's favourite psalm, her voice started to crock, the more she read the worst it got. She finished everyone remained silent.
"And now Martin Dinsdale would like to read something sent by his father" Ellie stepped down as Martin took to the stand,
"In the words of my father Ian Dinsdale, Patrick Pickard was not only a dear friend but a loving husband, father and brother, to me Patrick was the kindest most loving, most loyal man you could ever know, in meeting him you would automatically gain a friend. Patrick will be dearly missed and never forgotten. May he rest in peace" As Martin finished Nicky collapsed on her knees and for the first time since receiving the news she broke down in tears. Ellie ran to her mother and put her arms round her, Chrissie knelt down and wrapped her arms round her mother waste and Louis rested his head on hers. Nicky kept crying, all the tears she had held in were now being let go.

Back at home Nicky was still crying, but not only was it sadness and grief, anger was also taken over,
"Why, why" Nicky cried. Ellie tried to calm her mother down, but no matter what she did it didn't work,
"Mum, please calm down, please" Ellie pleaded,
"I hate this stupid war, I hate it, I hate it" Nicky continued to scream, shout and cry. In the dining room Martin was trying to keep the younger ones occupied with a board game, Chrissie was sat fidgeting wanting to know if her mother was Ok,
"Chrissie, it's ok stop fidgeting" Martin said to her as he rolled the dice,
"But mummy is upset, she needs us"
"I know but she is also very, very angry, Ellie doesn't want any of you getting hurt" Martin smiled at her. They carried on playing their board game until,
"Ahh" Martin heard a scream, he jumped up and ran out the dining room to see what was going on.

"Ellie laid at the bottom of the stairs, Nicky was slowly making her way down in shock at what she had done, Martin knelt down to see if Ellie was ok,
"Ellie, Ellie can you hear me" Ellie didn't answer, Nicky sat on the stairs crying,
"I didn't...I didn't mean to, I would, I would never..."
"Nicky I know you wouldn't, I know you would never hurt any of your children, now listen I need you to stay calm, I have to get Ellie to the hospital to make sure there is no serious damage, Ok" Nicky nodded; Martin stood up and went to the phone to call an ambulance.
The paramedics took Ellie to the hospital. Martin unwillingly had to stay behind to take care of everyone else. Nicky retreated back to her bedroom, she locked the door and turned out the light. Martin made sure the younger ones where settled into bed, he tucked Jennifer and Lindsey in and went to say goodnight to Louis, when he got to Chrissies room he saw she had made a forte around her bed,
"Chrissie, what have you done" he asked making his way towards her bed,
"I'm scared so I build a forte" Chrissie buried her under her bed covers,
"Ok, you don't have to be scared Chrissie" Martin sat on her bed,
"I know but, mummy has never hurt anyone of us, then daddy got killed and Ellie got pushed down the stairs"
"Chrissie, I know you mother would never hurt any of you. She's just upset, hurt and angry at the moment, the man she loves has been taken away from her and it's going to be really hard for her, for all of us, it will get better, but only in time, time is the only healer" Chrissie peaked her head over the covers and looked at Martin,
"Is Ellie going to be ok"
"I hope so, she is in good hands, the doctors and nurses will look after her until she is well enough to come home" Chrissie crawled over her bed to Martin and gave him a hug,
"Martin, please don't leave us"
"I won't I promise"

Martin entered his room, the whole house was quiet and dark, he sat on the front of his bed and sighed. He hadn't been there a month yet so much had happened. He thought about poor Ellie an hour and a half away at the city hospital, not knowing if she was ok. He changed into his pyjamas and got into bed. He turned out the light and lied down to go to sleep,
"Oh Ellie I hope you are ok" Martin thought as he closed his eyes and hoped that things would start to look up.

The phone rang the next day about 11.30 in the morning, Chrissie who was dusting the stairs put down her cloth and ran to answer the phone,
"Hello, Pickard Farm, Chrissie speaking, how can I help"
"Hello I'm Doctor Arthur Malcolm from the city hospital is your Mother there please" the person on the phone said,
"Um, my Mummy is still grieving but I can pass you on to a family friend who is in charge and looking after us if that's ok Doctor Malcolm"
"That will be fine if there is no other family member to talk to"
"No there isn't, I'll be go get Martin, please hold" Chrissie ran to get Martin who was cleaning the kitchen,
"Martin, Martin, Doctor Malcolm from the city hospital is on the phone" Martin dropped what he was doing and ran to the phone,
"Hello Martin Dinsdale speaking"
"Hello this is Doctor Malcolm calling about Miss Ellie Pickard"
"Yes is she ok"
"She is fine, a bit shaken and has a dislocated knee but she is going to be fine, we will be bringing her home tomorrow, is lunch time alright"
"That's great, thank you, yes, we will see you tomorrow" Martin smiled in relief that Ellie was ok. He gathered everyone together in the dining to tell them the good news,
"Right everyone, Ellie will be home tomorrow and..."
"YES" everyone cheered
"And" Martin continued " I want to do something special for her, so does anyone have any ideas"
"How about a nice dinner with the fancy china in the living room" Louis said
"I like that idea" Jennifer added
"Me too" Martin smiled. Everyone got back to cleaning. Louis and Jennifer cleaned the barn and fed the sheep, chickens and cows whilst Chrissie and Lindsey cleaned the rest of the house. Martin went down to the Village to get the ingredients for tomorrow night's dinner. When he arrived back he went upstairs to see how Nicky was doing,
"Nicky, how are you doing today" he asked as he walked in,
"I'm fine" Nicky was sat on her bed looking another photo of her and her late husband "the last picture ever taken of him before the war" she carried on, Martin sat on the bed next to her,
"Nicky, Ellie is going to be ok, she will be home tomorrow and we are having a dinner for her and we want you to be there"
"Ellie  is going to be ok" Nicky jumped up " oh thank god, I didn't mean to hurt her"
"I know you didn't. I'm going to check on the others, make sure they are ok, I've brought you a cup of tea, drink up"
"Thank you Martin" Nicky took the cup he had in his hand.

"See I can Jive" Chrissie said,
"You're doing it wrong Chrissie" Jennifer said, Martin went into the living room to see what was going on,
"You go rock step, shassy, shassy and a rock step"
"Oh right, I can do that"
"What are you two doing" Martin asked standing in the doorway
"Jiving, it's the American thing at the moment" Chrissie said
"Heard it on the radio" Jennifer added,
"Really, Ok then teach me"
"Ok, come on Martin" Chrissie dragged Martin into the room.

Lintwood Farm Chapter Three

Here is Chapter 3

Chapter 3

Nicky stumbled back and hit the living room wall, she stood there spaced out, she couldn't believe, she didn't want to believe that the man she loved was dead,
"Mum" Ellie stepped towards her and placed her hand on her Mother's arm "Mum say something" Ellie knew her mother's shock,
"Do you want to sit down" Nicky didn't answer "Mum please" Nicky turned and walked out of the room, everyone looked on, Chrissie got up and ran towards the door,
"Chrissie, honey don't" Ellie stopped her leaving the room,
"But Mummy needs someone" Chrissie began to cry again,
"I know, let me go, it's been quite a shock for everyone" Ellie turned to Martin "Martin can you make sure everyone is fed please"
"Of course Ellie" Martin got up and gave her a hug. She looked at him and smiled then walked out of the room.

Ellie found her mum in her bedroom, in her hand she held a picture of her wedding day to Patrick, she still hadn't shed a tear and stared out of the window into the distance,
"Mum, Mum" Ellie approached her mother an knelt down in front of her "Mum, please say something" Nicky didn't move, Ellie didn't know what to do, tears ran down her face, she sat with her for a while,
"Mum, we need you, you can't stay like this forever ok, take a few days to yourself, we can handle the farm until then, ok" Ellie kissed her mum on the forehead and headed back downstairs.

The dining room was quite when Ellie entered, Martin stood up and walked over to her,
"How is she" he asked as he took her hands,
"Still in shock, I'm going to go check on her a bit latter, how are the others"
"Their ok, still really upset" another tear ran down Ellie's cheek, Martin pulled her close and put his arms round her,
"It's going to be alright Ellie, I promise you everything will be alright, ok" Ellie nodded, she put his arms round him and gave him a hug. Ellie then sat down at the table and ate her dinner.
After they all helped clear the table and clean the kitchen. Everyone was still quite, the shock of the news still hung in the air. Ellie and Martin helped get Chrissie and Lindsey ready for bed and Jennifer and Louis got ready too,
"It's going to be ok Chrissie" Ellie and Martin tooked Chrissie onto bed "I promise in a week's time we will hold a memorial service for Dad ok" Chrissie nodded and closed her eyes.

Once everyone was asleep Martin and Ellie sat at the table with cup of tea each,
"I wish Mum would cry" Ellie said,
"What"
"Mum, she just sits there holding her wedding photo and staring out of the window, she hasn't cried yet"
"Ellie calm down, she will, she will ok, just give her time, she's in shock"
"I know, I'm just scared she will never recover" Martin put his arm round Ellie and kissed her on the side if the forehead, she looked at him,
"Thank you Martin, thank you so much for being here"
"It's my pleasure, It's just like when my mum died, I had to look after my sister's; your mum will come round, just give her time"
"I know, thank you Martin. I'm going to go to bed, I'll see you in the morning"
"Goodnight Ellie"

Ellie bought her mother breakfast and a cup of tea in the morning, Nicky was still sitting where she had been the night before still holding her wedding photo and staring out the window
"Morning Mum" Ellie put the down the tray she was carrying "I brought you some breakfast and a cup of tea, Mum, Mum" Ellie noticed her mother hadn't slept "How about we eat something ok" Nicky shook her head, "Mum you have to eat something, remember what you told me last year, we need to eat every meal as food is rationed now, please Mum" Nicky placed her wedding picture on her knee, she reached for her breakfast and started to eat, Ellie sat in front of her. Nicky ate slowly, with every bite she felt like throwing up, she struggled every time to swallow what was in her mouth. After she was finished Ellie took her bowl,
"I'll come and cheek on you  a bit later" Ellie picked up the tray and left the room, she returned to the kitchen to find Martin talking to Mrs Latham, they looked up,
"I'm so sorry for you loss Ellie" Mrs Latham gave her hug and left the room,
"I thought I would let her know what happened, if that's ok, I don't want to upset..."
"Martin it's fine, thank you, it saved me from doing it, I don't think I could have handled it" Ellie smiled at Martin who gave a little smile back,
"What do you need doing today Ellie"
"Oh...em...I haven't thought about it...em...the sheep need feeding, Chrissie will tend to the chickens, Louis the cows, can you make sure that Jenny and Lindsey tend to the vegetable garden and housework" Ellie breathed
"Ok, and what will you be doing Ellie" Martin stepped towards her,
"Well I will need to check on mum at lunch time, I'm at the shop this afternoon and this morning I'm going to go down to the church and arrange a memorial service for my Dad"
"Ok, Ellie let me know if you need any help with planning"
"I will" Ellie looked at him, Martin came a little closer took both of her hands as he put his head against hers. They smiled at each other, then Ellie left the room.

It was a cold day, Ellie had wrapped up warm and was slowly walking towards the church. The wind blew towards her as she walked, she kept looking up the sky wondering why this was happening, why was she the one who had to plan her fathers memorial, why her brother and sister had to grow up without a father. She entered the church and shivered. As she looked towards the alter she could see Reverend Edward preying. She walked down and sat to wait for him to finish. As she did she began to prey herself in hope that everything would be ok, a tear ran down her cheek.
"Good morning Miss Pickard" Reverend Edward said as he stood before her "How my I help you today"
Ellie looked up and smiled,
"Good morning Reverend, I need your help"
"What is it you need help with Ellie"
"A memorial service, my Dad..." Ellie began to cry before she had finished her sentence,
"Oh Ellie, I'm so sorry" Reverend Edward comforted her and handed her a tissue. Ellie explained everything and how her mother had reacted,
"You know Ellie, we all greave in different ways and it will take time for her to adjust to what has happened, your parents were very much in love, I remember the day I married them"
"You married my parents" Ellie look amazed as she didn't know how long he had been at the church for,
"Yes I did, anyway let me look at my diary and we will arrange date, wait here" Reverend Edward got up and went to get his diary. Ellie sat looking at the ceiling, she started to cry again as she remembered the good time she had with her Dad, all the walks and the theatre trips, days by the river and herding the sheep,
"Is next Monday ok Ellie" Reverend Edward said interrupting Ellie's thoughts,
"Oh...em...yes that's fine" she replied as she stood up,
"Ok will 12 noon be ok"
"Yes well I will see you next week"
"Ok Ellie, see you next week and I'm so sorry for your loss"
"Thank you Reverend" Ellie started to walk home, as he stepped outside it had started to rain,
"Dame" Ellie stated as she remembered she had forgotten an umbrella.

“Willies off Lindsey” Martin said as Louis, Jennifer, Lindsey and Chrissie come through the front door,
“Is my mummy ok Martin” Chrissie asked running up to him, he knelt down to her height,
“No change yet, but I’ve taken her some lunch ok” Chrissie nodded and Martin gave her a hug,
“Ok now go wash up lunch is on the table”
“Ok” Chrissie walked through the dining room to the kitchen. Martin looked out of the window as the rain poured down heavily,
“I hope Ellie’s ok”
“Ooo, someone’s falling in love” Jennifer teased her brother,
“Jennifer now is not the time”
“Sorry” Jennifer ran into the dining room

Ellie walked through the door an hour later, wet through, cold and shivering, Martin came out of the living room,
“Oh my god, Ellie you’re wet thought”
“I know, I forgot my umbrella” Ellie stood shivering as Martin grabbed a towel and put it round her,
“Martin I’m fine”
“No you’re not, come on let’s get you dried of and warm”
“Ok, can you give Mrs Fleming a ring and tell her I won’t be in today”
“Of course I will”
Ellie smiled as Martin led her upstairs.

Once dried and in clean dry clothes Ellie made her way downstairs. As she entered the living room she saw Martin had made her a bed up on the sofa to keep warm,
“Hi Ellie, I’ve er…I’ve made you up a bed to keep you warm”
“Thank you Martin…Achoo” Ellie sneezed
“Bless you” Martin said as Ellie lied on the sofa,
“Thank you” she smiled
“Here’s a hot water bottle Ellie” Chrissie handed Ellie a hot water bottle
“Thank you” she said taking the hot water bottle “how’s Mum” Chrissie looked at her,
“Same as this morning but she ate her lunch, Martin brought her another cup of tea whilst you were getting changed”
“Ok Chrissie, I will check on her in a bit” Ellie closed her eyes; Chrissie went back to playing a board game with the others. Martin looked at her and smiled, Ellie caught him as he opened her eyes and smiled back,
“Can you put the radio on please Martin?”
“Of course” Martin leaned over and turned the radio on then turned back to face Ellie. He grabbed his book and went to sit against the sofa,
“Hey Ellie, did you get a date for the….memorial service” he asked
“Yes Monday at noon”
“Ok, I’ll take care of it of you want” Martin took Ellie’s hand softly,

“No, no it’s ok. I can take care of it” Ellie fell asleep, Martin tooked her in and made sure she was warm then started to read hid book. Jennifer looked at him and smiled.
